What Is Yerba Mate?
Yerba mate is a traditional South American herbal drink made from the dried leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis plant, native to the subtropical forests of Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. For centuries, indigenous Guaraní communities have brewed and shared it as a social ritual — and today it has found fans all over the world, including right here in Kenya.
Unlike regular tea or coffee, yerba mate delivers a uniquely balanced energy boost: the alertness of caffeine, the calm focus of theobromine (also found in dark chocolate), and the antioxidant richness of green tea — all in one cup.
Loose-Leaf Yerba Mate: Why It's the Best Way to Brew
Loose-leaf yerba mate is the most traditional and flavourful form of the herb. Unlike tea bags, loose-leaf allows the full surface area of the leaves and stems to infuse, releasing a deeper, earthier flavour with every steep. It also gives you full control over the strength of your brew.
Loose-leaf yerba mate can be steeped multiple times — a single serving can be re-brewed 3 to 5 times before the flavour fades, making it surprisingly economical.
Health Benefits of Yerba Mate
- Natural energy boost — Contains 30–80 mg of caffeine per cup, providing sustained energy without the jittery crash of coffee.
- Rich in antioxidants — Higher antioxidant content than green tea, helping to fight oxidative stress.
- Supports mental focus — Theobromine and caffeine work together to improve concentration and mood.
- Aids digestion — Traditionally used to soothe the digestive system and reduce bloating.
- Boosts immunity — Contains vitamins C, E, B1, and B2, plus minerals like zinc and manganese.
How to Brew Loose-Leaf Yerba Mate
Brewing yerba mate is simple once you know the basics. Here's a quick guide:
- Fill your vessel — Use a gourd (mate cup), a French press, or a regular teapot. Fill it about two-thirds full with loose-leaf yerba mate.
- Add cool water first — Pour a small amount of cool or lukewarm water over the leaves and let them absorb it for 30 seconds. This protects the leaves and preserves nutrients.
- Add hot water — Heat water to around 70–80°C (do not boil). Pour slowly over the leaves.
- Steep and sip — Let it steep for 3–5 minutes. If using a gourd, sip through a bombilla (metal straw with a filter). Otherwise, strain and pour.
- Re-steep — Add more hot water and enjoy multiple rounds from the same leaves.
Tip: For a cold brew, simply steep the leaves in cold water for 4–8 hours in the fridge.
